Types of Car Interiors: Leather to Nylon Upholstery

Did you know that the average American spends 6% of their waking hours every day behind the wheel of a car? That is a lot of time on the road. This is why the interior of your vehicle is so important — you should be comfortable every time you get into your car and stay comfortable the entire trip.

Here at VIP European Auto, we are interior pros. We have spent an unbelievable amount of time restoring, repairing, and replacing interiors. We decided to take another look at the type of car interiors, from nylon upholstery to leather, and give you all modernized revamp. Let’s get started.

Nylon Upholstery

Nylon upholstery, known as the universal seat fabric , has it all. Durable, affordable, and available in multiple styles, it’s hard to go wrong with it. Nylon can look upscale, but it is traditionally less aesthetically pleasing than fake leather (or real leather), but is still more desirable than other fabric interiors.

Cleaning it is quite simple too, though it is tough to keep clean. Nylon is quite porous, and that means it will pick up dirt and debris every time you drive your car.

You can clean your nylon upholstery by vacuuming it to remove this debris, then use hot water and a mild detergent to do a deeper cleaning.

The superpower of Nylon, though, is that it has superman-like resistance to abrasions. Sun damage? Not so much. Nylon is susceptible to fading when exposed to prolonged sun. Regularly cleaning it will help, but it’s difficult to prevent it all together.

Polyester Upholstery

Polyester upholstery is a popular automotive choice and it is designed to look like suede. It’s available in numerous colors and styles as well. This soft fabric is quite comfortable, but it is also a bit harder to clean than nylon upholstery.

Spruce up your car with polyester and you’ll transform your interior with an eye-catching look. However, polyester is a night. Keep cleaning products on hand, and make sure they are approved for your specific upholstery.

To clean it, wring out a damp cloth and apply the cleaning solution to the cloth. The cleaning product should be designed for microsuede to lift out the accumulated dirt and debris. The more often you clean your polyester upholstery, the easier it will be to keep the interior in pristine condition.

Vinyl Upholstery

Vinyl fabrics are good for various types of upholstery for car seats and boat covers. They’re sturdy and durable and often resemble leather, but without leather’s longevity.

Vinyl is non-porous, so it will not trap dirt and debris the way other types of automotive upholstery will. Vinyl upholstery can be kept clean with nothing more than a damp cloth or cleaning towel.

If your vinyl is starting to smell, you can deodorize it by sprinkling baking soda on the newly-cleaned seats. Leave it overnight and then vacuum and scrub the residue off the following day.

Real Leather Upholstery

For next level comfort and style, nothing can beat leather upholstery. If you can afford the investment, real leather will treat you well for years. Real leather can last up to 20 years and acquires a sophisticated aged look over time. Also, to compliment the durability, real leather is also easy to clean and wipes off most messes without staining.

It is stain resistant and is easy to clean, though you will want to keep some leather conditioner on hand after you wet the material.

The downside of the leather is that you will need to maintain it to keep it from fading or becoming brittle overtime.

Also, leather is great at absorbing heat, which means hot summers could burn your legs if you sit down too quickly.
